If I had not upgraded the kernel a reboot would not have been necessary. I
upgraded the kernel from 2.2.5 to 2.2.17-pre. And rebooted. But the new
tulip drivers did not work with my NIC card. So I had to go back and forth
between the two kernels while I figured out what the problem was. Finally
decided to stay with the older kernel for a while.
