If u want to change the default setting for all users, create the
file /etc/sysconfig/desktop (ON RH6.2)(AFAIR) and put the line KDE or
GNOME in it. remove any other line. Read /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients to see
how the desktop changing is taking place.
PS: I tried but could not get a hand at the article you are talking
about. So I may be completely ignorant of what you want. But the above
should help you whatsoever.
