AFAIK, its an abbreviation of "ThathaChari", the nom de plume(!)
that he used to post to soc.culture.tamil ... And is supposed to be a
nickname that carried over from College days at Annamalai University or
somesuch - My memory is failing, but IIRC his page at
http://www.aunet.org/thaths/ or www.aunet.org/~thaths/ should tell you all
this and more.

PS: Its not pronounced "that-s" .. Its "Thaths" with the H .. Like
in Tamil (What Madrasis speak), "Thatha" == Grandpa and Chari == <I Don't
know>
It basically makes the guy a very old and revered guy with lotsa
fundas and perenially subjecting people to sermons and lectures about
philosophy and life and worldly pleasures(!) - I do not know if the
LI-Admin displayed any/all of the aforementioned characteristics to gain
that nickname...but 2 of the 3 other "Thatha" and "Perusu" [ Old guy ] and
"Variyar" which are similies ... gained them for precisely this :-)
PPS: Shouldn't all this be on LIG instead of LIH?!?!
