What relevance is this question, to Linux Help, within India? I
take this opportunity to bitch for awhile:
<rant>
This list is getting more and more bloated with everyday, and
there are people posting messages from 1998, so all need to do time travel
because some random viruses are floating around? $lemur posts with one
word replies, like "Maybe", when it isn't _even_ yes/no [ If people wanted
opinions, they would ask elsewhere - a Linux-India-HELP list is for HELP,
not Opinions. My point is, If you don't feel like helping, stfu and dont
reply. Or if you are not sure about it either. Or else what results is
this one opinion word reply carrying all the noise of some 5 or 6
followups to an original posting. And before you know it, Shanthi Herbal
Products decides that my knowledge (or lack, thereof) qualifies me to use
Herbal Shampoo every evening and spams me every fortnight. I mean, doesn't
this all sound insane? If someone *REALLY* wanted [to] help, would he now
look up at a list like this? That all this is obvious is shown by the fact
that most/all of the old timers have unsubscribed from this list, and
everyday, I'm greeted with half a dozen emails on the freaking bane of
life, Sis <whatever card> and Yamaha <whatever else card> ...
I am *seriously* contemplating quitting the list -- No, this is
not a threat/request/*anything* - I just don't feel upto doing it -
There's a lot of sentiment attached to this, because I learnt a LOT of
things on ilugc/LIH - My initiation with Linux, very many trivia about lot
of things, People's help with Debian ... I got ideas, guidance and I am
very grateful and thankful for that. That alone is the ONLY factor that is
still keeping me here. But the time has come where I simply don't have any
time left to look at every of some 1000+ emails every day and remain even
*remotely* productive on a personal stand. I wonder if there are any
solutions to this? And yes, I know what a message digest is, .. but thats
not what I'm looking at. Above all, are there any other people that feel
this way? I wonder if I am alone in this..
</rant>
I guess in just a few more days' or so, I will lurk around, on
bsd-india, ilugc, LIG, of the indianised lists. See you guys around..
mdavid> is the site up or has it changed?
My basic crib is this: If you can't be bothered reading the
welcome post that you automagically get, on subscription on which imho,
Thaths has done a nifty job, and figuring out what it means -
"Linux-India-Help is meant for discussions about Linux and/or Help about
Linux, hopefully with reference to Indians or region-specific" .. then why
should anyone else be bothered trying to help you out? And no, an answer
like, "I use Linux to look at htdig.org and I'm Indian and this is a
request for help .." does NOT qualify by *MY* definition of a valid post
-- Well, I'd consider a request for pr0n to be equally qualified to be a
valid post, on that basis :)
Since I seem to be a nice mood ->
Well, *I* couldn't access it from localhost, either. Next time,
please try telnet'ing/ssh'ing into some free shell provider, where you are
expected to have account[s] from which you can lynx out to the WWW --
examples include
sdf.lonestar.org,hobbiton.org,zippy.shellyeah.org,m-net.arbornet.org [Yes,
I know M-NET is down right now],freenet.nether.net ...
http://www.freeshells.org or somesuch catalogs a list of free
shell providers, too.
Or go on IRC and ask someone. Or *something* - The idea behind my
caustic email is this [ among other things, that is ] : Approximately 2000
people all over India do not *Have* to worry about why you can't get to
htdig.org. I know very many people who use a webmail interface, from a
browsing center, with a pathetic interface and connect speeds, in a brave
attempt at learning Linux. Imagine clicking 4 times, and waiting
approximately 10 minutes, to see a 3 line e-mail asking if someone can
reach a website.... Well, thankfully you had the goodsense to mark an
appropriate subject line... and not using a 15 line spanning .signature
that includes a copy of your bio-data for any prospective employers[?] -
oh well, here I go again.
Maybe I am getting/have gotten too old/stupid/lame for using a
computer :)
Feel free to take this offline, on personal email,
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> or on the list, if you deem necessary [It can't get any
more Off-topic anyway, heh]
