unfortunately both explore2fs and captain nemo have problems if linux is
installed on a win98 machine...As do ltools.
Something to do with the way win98 handles partitions ? the filenames
have junk characters appended to them and so many of them cannot be
opened.

I found that captain nemo which someone recommended as "much better than
explore2fs" was in fact much much crappier. Seems like in this case open
source is the better bet.
