IIRC, it is possible to load lilo in the boot sector of the extended
partition (*not* the logical drive, but the extended partition itself)
and set the extended partion as active. *Check the docs*

I vaguely remember doing this sometime in '95 - '96 when I distrusted
lilo with my MBR.

You will need to use Linux fdisk to set the extended partition as
bootable. The downside is that it confuses the *hell* out of DOS fdisk
which cannot do this. You will not be able to use DOS fdisk (at least
DOS 6.22) after doing this because it complains of invalid boot record
or something.
