As a rpm, or as *.tar.gz (or *.srpm)? If rpm, do rpm -ivh <kernel files>. 
Use the install option, don't upgrade. If anything goes wrong, you will have your old 
kernel to rescue you.

If as a source file,

make config
make install
make modules depend
make clean.

Read the kernel HOWTO for details. Its given bvery throughly there.
