Dear Thaths,
I saw a mail you sent to ilughyd about formalising ilug as a registered
"organisation" with represntatives from lugs etc. I thought I must
share my views with you.
//
Linux India has been operating so far as a group of, to borrow a
phrase,
"communicating individuals".
//
I like that one.
But, what is wrong in "communicating individuals" ?
The very act of formalising a LUG goes against the spirit of Linux. If
we all think a little, we will notice that nobody "organised" the Linux
community. It just grew and everyone joined in and contributed to make
it such a great phenomenon. Everyone spoke for himself and every one who
contributed did so without any binding rules and conditions or
hierarchies. Is anybody complaining ?
We, in India, have been interacting and working with each other,
courtesy ilug and local lugs. Is it necessary to break this culture ?
Yes, we are "communicating individuals" . The attempt to "organisify"
this culture will only stop us from "communicating" or behaving as
"individuals". Individuals speak for themselves out of their own
convictions, experience and beliefs. Representatives can only
politicalise issues (at least in India).
Creating an organisation means creating rules and representations. This
will invariably lead to creation of political groups and lobbies.
Already, Linux has become an easy opportunity for many unscrupulous and
greedy vendors in India. It will not take them too much time to hijack
ilug too, or at least put it into a dirty mess.
Already I notice that many real Linux gurus are NOT part of ilug or the
local lug. The most important reason is that ilug is already filled with
political groups. Believe me, creating an "organisation" with
hierarchies and constraints will only lead to more people trying to
avoid lug. Remember, we are the only country which has perhaps the
largest number of political parties within the same country. We
politicise everything.
Are we the only country where the lug is not an "organisation" ?
Certainly not. So why impose an organisation ? Is lack of an
"organisation" the only reason we have not won Nobel prizes ?
Is lug the only group of professionals who do not work under an
"organisation" ? Certainly not. When there are so many professionals
who just meet and discuss in cyberworld why create a paper based
organisation ? After all, we have ourselves been part of so many
egroups and newsgroups and have all benefited so much. Do we really
need an "organisation" ?
Do we really need a lug with its own parliament and MPs?
//
To ensure equal representation and high signal to
nice ratio we have decided to hold these discussions in a private,
closed
mailing list.
//
I dont like this one.
Any democratic setup is created only with the consent and participation
of everyone concerned. Not by in-camera proceedings. We need everybody's
goodwill and everybody's ideas (even if it appears to be "noise" to some
of us). Let every one concerned say what he/she feels. Let us not kill
the
spirit of openness which Linux has taught us.
In short, let us remain as "communicating individuals" and not become
"conflcting politicians".
If it ain't broke -- don't fix it
