Hi, For all those doing anything remotely associated with biology, here's good news. I recently came upon a whole suit of bioinformatics software from the EBI (Europeon Bioinformatics Institute) site ( http://www.uk.embnet.org/Software/EMBOSS/ ), released under GPL, open development (if you're familiar with the Genetics Computer Group's costly, proprietary Wisconsin Package - this is a complete open source rewrite of that, and some things are better, naturally). It's currently available for Linux, Solaris and Irix. The compilation and installation on my Linux box went very smooth. They also have two mailing lists. So probably now you can keep your MacOS and Windows aside. (The EBI has also started a genome annotation programme under an Apache style license.) If you're interested in bioinformatics join the development now so that we can expect to see wetware-tools on our favourite CDs. (Debian alredy has a headstart in this). (PS: a discussion is going on at bionet.software on open source software in bioinformatics) join the wagon soon, best wishes, Indraneel /************************************************************************. # Indraneel Majumdar E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # Bioinformatics Unit (EMBNET node), URL: http://scorpius.iwarp.com # # Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, # # Hyderabad, India - 500076 # `************************************************************************/ ---------------------------------------------- LIH is all for free speech. But it was created for a purpose. Violations of the rules of this list will result in stern action.
