To improve X performance try options like fast_vram and
check whether acceleration is enabled? switch over to 
light weight window managers like icewm,black b, if possible try 
reducing the color depth and resolutions
dont use heavy wall paper and themes
and disable unwanted services (like portmap,kudzu,sendmail,
smbd,crond,NIS/NDS..etc) running using ntsysv.
