Looks like the root partition is mounted as Read-Only because of errors
in the rc.sys... file.
You can try the following.
1. Download the "boot" and "root" images used for installing Slackware.
a. http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/
distributions/slackware/bootdsks.144/bare.i
( For IDE harddisk)
b. http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/
distributions/slackware/rootdsks/color.gz
2. Create the boot and root floppies.
(You need two floppies).
3. Boot using these. The advantage is that a minimal
root filesystem which is present on the second floppy is
loaded into the RAM.
4. Mount the hard-disk partition. Edit / change mode etc.
5. Reboot from hard-disk
This procedure was sucessful when the /etc/fstab had been wrongly
changed on one of our systems.
