Hi,
If you want to know about software - there are quite a few... Piranha is
one (its gets installed by default under RedHat)... Piranha is based on
the LinuxVirtualServer (LVS) project... so you can go straight to the
parent project at LinuxVirtualServer.org ... in addition there is
another superb load balancing, monitoring and clustering application
from SGI - Its called FailSafe... until now it was only available for
Irix, but now the SGI team has even made it available for Linux... They
are collaborating with SuSE on its development... You can go to
oss.sgi.com for more details and downloads.. they have full manuals,
software and other papers.. drbd is a tool for mirroring servers... if
you go to linux-ha.org you can have a look at other High Availability
(HA) software that is being developed for Linux - HEartbeat is one of
them as is mon...
IN a nutshell, both clustering and load balancing are techniques to
increase the availability of computing equipment - it could be routers
or servers - anything... specifically for load balancing there are quite
a few techniques... (load-balancing.net will give you a good overview
about each)... there are server based techniques, router based
techniques and switch based techniques.. nowadays you get load balancing
switches... that can balance traffic of most kinds... the technique
mostly used is NAT or Network Address Translation... LVS also talks
about other techniques such as direct routing and tunnelling...
if you are looking for some more specific information or white papers
etc.. i have some i can share...
hope all this helps...
Abhas.
