Going by the number of questions posted on the problems with X and the
various video cards, it seems that this is a very big problem being faced
by all users. In fact u r in luck if the card setup works out fine for you
the first time around.
In fact, I earlier had a S3Trio card. I tried to set it up for use with RHL
(5.2 uptil 6.1), but the xf86config or Xconfigurator would not get me
anywhere. I tried all the possible combinations that the thing offered to
me, but to no avail. Someday, on excessive tinkering with the XF86Config,
the thing worked (pretty ugly, but enough for me to proclaim that "X runs
on my system" !!)
The fact that I had an unsupported monitor (Samtron 5Ei) made the things
difficult, although the card was there in the database.
Since then, I have shifted to SiS 6326, and it is working fine even at 24bpp.
Continuing, one of my friends has Debian 2.2 on his system with i810
motherboard. The best display he could get was 320x200. Is there any way to
make the X run normally on his system.
PS :::::>> Going by my experience, whenever you set the runlevel to 5, in
inittab, the X server starts somehow, even when it might not start well
when run from the console in normal (runlevel 3) logins.
