X is a very client-server thinggy.  You can run an X application (say,
xterm) on a remote machine and have the window display on your desktop. 
The funny thing with X is that the remote machine is called the client and
your desktop is called a server.  You, obviously, need to have some kind of
X server running on your desktop.  Even WinDOS machines have X servers such
as eXceed.
