Importance will be learnt the hard way when you are recovering from a disk
crash ;)  All the core, important stuff in / and /usr, /home for all the user
files, /tmp for temp junk, /opt for optional stuff like star office ...

So a disk crash, even if it trashes one partition, doesn't lose all the data.

let it be - or install lilo, edit lilo.conf and run it ... ;)
of course, best would be to keep a small /boot within the 1024 cylinder limit
(the new lilo doesn't mind that btw)
