Disable any backgrounds, reduce the number of virtual desktops, stop all
services u do not need. KDE seems to be hungry for memory, use fvwm if u
want it faster.

If it is a winmodem, it might not work. Someone can give u an idea
abt this.

If u want to upgrade, u can do it without uninstalling. Or u can
install over a old linux partition. If u dont want linux, just delete the
partitions and make new ones.
If u want to uninstall rpms (ie software) "man rpm" or better use
kpackage or gnorpm.
