I have not tried yet, cause could not get the control codes for
the particular printer, I too am interested in acquiring the control
codes for HP600 series.  

now if you have the control codes, write your own filter 
script to preprocess the print data and prefix with the start
economode command and postfix the print data with a close 
economode command.

some where in the documentation, there was explained
a way to avoid the stair stepping, this was by reading in
all the print data line by line, remove the line feed
add the line data with line feed and carriage return 
then send it to printer.  This can be effectively
modified to incorporate the above addition.

Implement such a filter to one printer entry in the 
printcap and use this entry for draft printing.
