Without more details of yr setup, just two hints possible -

check yr setup for header rewriting / masquerading of domains (DM in
sendmail.cf) etc. 

see /var/log/maillog for what is going on

check yr mutt / pine config for screwed up return paths, bad envelope
sender ([EMAIL PROTECTED] will not be accepted by the outside world, as it
resolves only in your lan - but [EMAIL PROTECTED] resoloves) etc.
