Any particular error message - like you are trying to read a remote imap
folder?
Or else, if you are reading an over-full mailbox, pine has this tendency to
read the entire mail in when it rescans the mailbox - takes a hell of a lot of
time.
You could switch full-time to mutt and ditch pine, you know - that's the best
solution ;)
