I thought I replied to this earlier.
Pine tends to rescan the whole mbox every few minutes (or whenever you reopen
it). With large mailboxes (and limited memory) this can - and has - caused
grief.
Mutt doesn't have such a bad habit.
Solutions -
Save your older mails in other folders (say if this is the li folder, make it
li-august, li-september ... etc). Reduce the size of the offending mailbox.
or (better still) -
Junk pine and use mutt ;)
