It exports the environment variables as per what you want to set that variable as.
For ex:
to set the terminal type to ansi you would use
export TERM=ansi
here TERM is an environment variable
you have given it a value ansi
and export makes it a system setting.
You can confirm the value of term by typing
env | grep TERM
