but this is after the kernel has detected the card, for
that you need to load a kernel module for all the stock
kernels, or recompile ur kernel with options built in.

The Compex rl100atx, is supported by the rl100a.o module, 
try loading it with >modprobe rl100a< and it should
detect eth0, if this works out, do netconfig, and set the
hostname, fqdn, device id (eth0), ipno, kernel module and save
this (this is for RH6.2 only, AFIK)
