Thanks for the reply. But I have only 57 newsgroups on the site i am trying
to get and the message is
503 initial server rebuild in progress (57 groups complete), please try
again la
ter.
And thats the status all along. When i start nntpcached, i get two
processes, one that is waiting for nntp connections and another that says
nntpcache: merging "active" <- newsgroups.bea.com and whhich changes to
nntpcache: merging "active.times" <- newsgroups.bea.com
nntpcache: merging "newsgroups" <- newsgroups.bea.com
and some time later, this one dies and only one remains
the message i get in the /var/log/news/news.err is
Oct 11 18:52:10 zero nntpcache-nocem[15668]: nocem.c:325:Bad file
descriptor: gr
oup change to 'news.lists.filters' failed
thereafter nothing happens except for the 503 error.
Any pointers to what this can be?

for quite a while this is OK, depening on the number of newsgroups and the
power of the machine/line speed etc.
If it last more than an hour ...
