Hi Friends,

I just discovered how to make mp3 from an Audio CD or a wav file in Linux
(RH 6.2), I would certainly like to share it with you; I am briefly (kaam
chalaao) describing the usage, well I believe in ease of use. So, let's
begin:

REQUIREMENTS:

a) Hardware and OS:

1. PC with a working Sound Card and
2. Linux 2.2 or greater (hopefully)

b) Software required:

1. Lame ( http://www.sulaco.org/mp3/ )
   (visit http://rpmfind.net/ and search for 'lame')
   download lame-3.22b-1.i386.rpm ( size = 140.70 kb)
   or see the attachment of this mail. or get an rpm of your distribution

2. Cdparanoia (available in your Distribution CD)

INSTALLATION:

i) CDPARANOIA installation:

   for Red Hat 6.2 users, install cdparanoia by inserting the cdrom
   and by running the following commands:
   1. mount /mnt/cdrom
   2. rpm -Uvh /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/cdparanoia*.rpm

   for SuSe 6.3+ users,
   1. mount /cdrom
   2. rpm -Uvh /mnt/cdrom/full-names/i386/cdparano*.rpm

ii) LAME installation:
    I attached rpm for Red Hat 6.x, (see attachment) or you can download it
from http://rpmfind.net, if you use SuSe then see the
Vendor/Packager/Distribution and select the appropriate i386 rpm not
src.i386.rpm.

    One command to install/upgrate Lame:

    $ rpm -Uvh lame*.rpm

    if the above procedure went smoothly, then you can now start ripping
Audio CDs and Convert WAV to MP3. Here is how to do that:

USAGE: Use inside Konsole or a terminal

1) WAV to MP3: it is very very easy, run the following command:

  $ lame <sourceFile.wav> <targetFile.mp3>

  sourceFile should be a wave file and targetFile will be the output name,
so naturally it should be an mp3.

  example:
   $ lame /usr/share/sounds/KDE_Startup.wav ./KDE_Startup.mp3

   to Test:
   $ mpg123 KDE_Startup.mp3 (or) xmms KDE_Startup.mp3

2) Audio CD to WAV then to MP3 (no direct procedure ;)

  to copy track 3 from Audio CD run the following commands in a line:

  $  cdparanoia 3 song3.wav && lame song3.wav song3.mp3

Bugs/Hints:

Somtimes it (lame) gets hung during cd ripping, press CTRL+C to stop the
operation.
read man pages of 'lame' by running 'man lame'
delete the WAV file as soon as you have finished with the mp3 encoding,
since its large file-size reduces performace of OS.

Request:

Please help ourselves and Linux Community in Learning Linux and its many
powerful utilities by contributing to Linux-Documentation-Project. Please
visit http://www.linuxdoc.org/, to learn about how to contribute to HOWTOS
and Documentation work. If you know more about cdda2wav and cdparanoia
front-ends like Ksoundrecord or such utilities, don't keep it to yourself,
share with others, knowledge grows by distributing :^) Hope you find this
mail useful...

Yours Friendly,
Rizwaan.
