Try this...

It is assumed that 'wd' is the directory where your true type fonts are
residing. This sequence of commands are tested under RHL6.1

# cd wd
# ttmkfdir > fonts.scale
#cp fonts.scale fonts.dir
# mkfontdir
# /usr/sbin/chkfontpath --list
# /usr/sbin/chkfontpath --add /usr/share/fonts/ttf
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs restart
# xset fp+ rehash

Or visit my page, http://mhapya.tripod.com/linuxtips.html#ttf. It lacks the cp
command in above sequence, but worked fine on RHL 6.2
