Actually, the default settings in lame don't really produce true cd-quality mp3's.
(It's generally agreed upon now that a bitrate of 128 kbp/s isn't true cd-quality
anymore...... 256 kbp/s is more like it.)
I've started using the following to encode my mp3's:
lame -v -V 1 -b 128 -h -q 1 -mj
It produces mp3's about 20% larger than the default settings used by lame, but the
quality seems to make it worthwhile.
