 Partition to your taste - and according to the number / size of files.

 For example I use

 mallet@mjollnir:/etc> df   
 Filesystem           1k-blocks      Used Available Use% Mounted on
 /dev/hda1               396623    104846    271296  28% /
 /dev/hda7              2087180    494468   1486688  25% /home
 /dev/hda5              1517920    844264    596548  59% /usr
 
 Advantage being that if you have to upgrade your linux (for example) then your
 data files are safe in another partition.  Lots more advantages as well.
