Some drivers do require recompilation.......for ex.
we  bought some new Compaq deskpro's which have the Intel815
chipset with onboard ethernet controller. The driver that Compaq
provided for Linux (onthe softpaq site) would work only with
kernel version 2.2.12 - 2.2.14. All other kernel versions needed 
recompilation....
