As far as I remember, xf86config confirmation sequence was tricky when I
first used it. I think even after you selected it your card it asks you to
reconfirm or something where you may enter a wrong choice. Try running
xf86config again and note down your choices as you go. As the card shows up
in the list it should not cause much of a problem.
Also remember to check the monitor parameters...
A quick fix is set the whole thing as generic SVGA :-). Although not the
best solution but it works 90% of the time.
