[LIH] problem with gnome's halt and reboot

Hi

I'm having Red Hat 6.2 with GNOME desktop. After clicking the
logout button and selecting halt or reboot, Login window manager
again prompts login window.System neither reboots nor halts.

Right now I'm shutting down the machine from command prompt.

What coluld be the reason?
I feel it is related to GNOME's property.

please help.
