I don't remember the original query, but running netconf (or any of the
linuxconf stuff) is usually a bad idea.

Now what sort of a DNS server are you setting up? If you are setting up
one for just dialup access, then just forwarding the queries to your ISP
will usually work (and are significantly faster). If you want to setup
one for a domain, you need to have the forward and reverse lookup files
set up (which we here can help you setup).

Please post the relevant parts of /etc/named.conf and the lookup files
here.  Also, the extract from /var/log/messages when you do ndc stop;
ndc start.
