[LIH] problem with finger.

hello,
 i am facing a wierd problem
When i login to a linux machine and see last command, i see that i have 
logged in and it shows the correct time.
but once i log out , then i log in as root and then give 
finger "username", i see my last login as wrong. 
it doesnt seem to get updated.
what could be the problem?
