I did have a problem with X startup, when the desktop would look like it was a 640*480
with 8bpp, switching to console and back usually corrected the problem.

Actually woody now has X 3.3.6...the ver4.x series are now in progeny and
unstable...maybe you could grab those and see if it settles these problems?
