i know i know ... thisis a topic that has undergone loads of discussion

the problem is taht after referring to the archives, i was directed to
search for a posting by alan cox. the problem is that it wa s so long ago
that i can't seem to find the relevant post....
i also visited the www.exocore.com/linux
site ... to no avail. i tired out the stuff detailed there (downloaded the
alsa drivers compiled, configured and installed added the relevant settings
to /etc/onf.modules etc.)
the problem is that while booting it says the use of conf.modules has been
deprecated... so i copied everything to /etc/modules.conf
the system still spews an error message stating that the module
sound-service-0 not found
what do i do

relevant details:
kobian Mercury intel 810 motherboard.
AC 97 sound chipset.

no problems with the chip i hope.. since it works flawleesly in win98.

help anyone?
