fixing your college server dns (and installing a caching nameserver) would be a
great idea :)
oh btw, try mailing user@[ip.addy.of.mx] (the ip address of the domain's mx
server - to which you should be connecting to deliver mail - enclosed in square
brackets - this is "domain literal" addressing)
[to find out - nslookup -q=mx domain.com]
you can use your mail client this way :)
