Yes I do it when i run limited linux from CDROM.
Create ramdisk of desire size and mount them on /etc /var /tmp
But remember this must be done in rc.sysinit or rc.local, because /etc and
/var will be required for complete boot up to login prompt.
BTW are the lister interested in running limited linux (mail, httpd, ftp)
from CD-ROM,
The advantage?
The box becomes completely root kit /hack proof, because there is no hard
disk, simply reboot and your box is on track. The hard disk (if required)
space can be borrowed from another machine by samba, nfs, ftp.
I will put up a howto if needed.
