Hi! I recently downloaded and compiled a new kernel v2.4.0 while at the same time keeping the older v2.2.14-12 handy. I have compiled into the new kernel a lot of firewalling options, half of which I thought seemed nice to have(netfilter etc. etc.). The new kernel seemed to work well in almost every thing i used the system earlier for. However I started getting this strange error recently. I use the facilities of two ISPs - MTNL and NOW. I use MTNL for mail(pop3) and NOW for connectivity/mail(smtp). The problem is that when I boot into 2.4.0 I can connect to almost everything on the web but my current ISP's mailservers - both SMTP and POP3. However, when I boot into the older 2.2.14, I can connect to the very same servers for the same services ... At all times I can connect to the other ISP(MTNL)'s mailservers for the same services. I am attaching a sample output below. I am at my wit's end trying to make out any sense of the whole thing. Has this got _anything_ to do with default firewalling rules of netfilter? Thanks , Sandip P.S. NOW is running Netscape Messaging Server while MTNL is using Sendmail COnsole output follows ================================================================ ->After rebooting into 2.2.14 ... -> ->[sandipb@kajaal] ~$ uname -a ->Linux kajaal.home 2.2.14-12 #1 Tue Apr 25 12:50:06 EDT 2000 i586 unknown ->[sandipb@kajaal] ~$ date ->Mon Jan 22 23:04:09 IST 2001 ->[sandipb@kajaal] ~$ telnet maildel.now-india.net.in 25 ->Trying 203.195.128.66... ->Connected to maildel.now-india.net.in. ->Escape character is '^]'. ->220 ***************************************************************************************** ->quit ->221 dadel1.now-india.net.in ESMTP server closing connection ->Connection closed by foreign host. ->[sandipb@kajaal] ~$ date ->Mon Jan 22 23:04:47 IST 2001 ->[sandipb@kajaal] ~$ telnet mail2.mtnl.net.in 25 ->Trying 203.94.243.71... ->Connected to mail2.mtnl.net.in. ->Escape character is '^]'. ->220 delhi1.mtnl.net.in ESMTP Sendmail 8.9.1 (1.1.20.3/07Jul00-0916AM) Mon, 22 Jan 2001 23:01:09 +0530 (IST) ->quit ->221 delhi1.mtnl.net.in closing connection ->Connection closed by foreign host. ->[sandipb@kajaal] ~$ -> -> ->------------------------------------------------------------------------- ->After rebooting into 2.4.0 ... -> ->[sandipb@kajaal] ~$ uname -a ->Linux kajaal.home 2.4.0 #4 SMP Sun Jan 7 04:56:49 /etc/localtime 2001 i586 unknown ->[sandipb@kajaal] ~$ date ->Mon Jan 22 22:58:38 IST 2001 ->[sandipb@kajaal] ~$ telnet maildel.now-india.net.in 25 ->Trying 203.195.128.66... -> ^C ->[sandipb@kajaal] ~$ date ->Mon Jan 22 22:59:00 IST 2001 ->[sandipb@kajaal] ~$ telnet mail2.mtnl.net.in 25 ->Trying 203.94.243.71... ->Connected to mail2.mtnl.net.in. ->Escape character is '^]'. ->220 delhi1.mtnl.net.in ESMTP Sendmail 8.9.1 (1.1.20.3/07Jul00-0916AM) Mon, 22 Jan 2001 22:55:18 +0530 (IST) ->quit ->221 delhi1.mtnl.net.in closing connection ->Connection closed by foreign host. ->[sandipb@kajaal] ~$ -> -> -- ------------------------------------- Sandip Bhattacharya sandipb @ bigfoot.com http://www.sandipb.net ------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------- Find out more about this and other Linux India mailing lists at http://lists.linux-india.org/
