This has been planned so that users may have a backup of all the mails
sent and received by them. In regular intrevals, the administrator may
backup all the home directories and then zero the size of inbox/outbox
files in them.
In IMAP, if the users delete a mail on the client, it is deleted on the
server and the user might not want to get a list of all the irrelevant
mails everytime. Yes, using IMAP, he may organise all the mails in
folders but in the above scenario, we have users(mostly marketing
people) who might delete a mail once and then ask the administrator for
its retrival later. So, with the proposed setup, any mail of any user
can be retrived anytime.
