nmap is a cool utils available in http://www.insecure.org
nmapfe is it's GUI front end ...........
the simple most scanning you need to do is:
$ nmap -sS -O www.scanedsite.net
scan option->SYN Stealth, General Options-> TC&ICMP, and OS Detection !! (it may
fail)
