hi,

I think you can use mt and tar to append to a tape.
Only requirement is that when using the tar on the tape
initially, you should have used to -n option to it saying
it is a block device (and such).

(Sorry if that option is no more pertinent, I have had
experience using it on an SVR 4.2 system quite some
years back. But I am very positive that you could very
much do what you have asked for.)
