Hi

Considering that fsck does not finish in a reasonable time, I would advice 
you to find out badblocks on the system. If they turn out to be extremely 
high in number, you can go for a new HDD straight away. Of course power 
shutdowns are  very bad and UPS is worth of investment.

man badblocks for more detail. The binary resides in /sbin. Assuming that you 
can get up linux. Or reinstall it from scratch and choose to format with bad 
block checking...
