I am also running mutt in an xterm - precisely mutt -y.

Upto here, exactly the same settings as you.

Mutt does not continuously check the mailbox for new mails, it does so
in configurable intervals of time. So, wait for some time and the 'N'
will appear automatically.

Check these two settings in your .muttrc:

set mail_check=5
mailboxes $MAIL =Linux/linux-india =Linux/linux-programmer =Linux/linux-general

The first one tells mutt how often it should check a mailbox for new
mail; it is 5 seconds in my case. The second one tells mutt which all
mailboxes can have new mail. That is just a partial list. :-)

Set these, and try running mutt as mutt -y. See if you get new mail
notification within 5 seconds.
