The proper way to use a cdrom is:

        mount /mnt/cdrom
        <do whatever you like>
        umount /mnt/cdrom
        eject

        now if you want to use any other cdrom, put the cd in the drive
and repeat the steps.

        In the gnome/KDE , I think there are icons for CD. When you want
to change the cd, right click, there will be an option to unmount
drive. Do it, and then put the next CD.
