Is this an external SCSI or IDE? As far as external SCSI are concerned,
it's just plug and play. I plugged my HP9600 to a runing machine and
xcdroast detected it immediately. For an IDE writer you may have to pass
some kernel parameters (hdx=ide-scsi) and load the scsi-hostadapter module
(not always required). Checkout the cdrecord homepage for more information
