I've not used Maya, but blender is real cool. And also Mlcreate (or the
old Moonlight creator), povray with and without front-ends, Xray, kray,
ac3d (shareware cad program which freely saves to .pov if you can finish
in one sitting). These are probably more raytracers than animators. Gimp
has a lot of plugins for image processing. What exactly is your
requirement?
