hi dipankar,
        The easiestway to a forgotten root password is to remove the password from 
/etc/shadow for root by booting into a shell.but if U want to get the old 
password,that is quite a impossible job.But U can try giving the password 
string in shadow to a password cracker software which could try a brute force 
dicronary algorithm to get it.search on the net for password cracking tools 
like john's cracker etc.
