rather, to "soften" the surge, not "ground".

ligtning is very-high "voltage" and relatively low (in relation to the
voltage) curent.

the knots add inductors in series, which increase the total inductance
in the line. higher the inductance, more the resistance.

its not a fuse, its an obstruction. it won't blow off itself to save
devices on the line, rather it would present a very high resistance to
the surge (voltage/curent).
