|Yes Mukund. I will do that but my main problem now is termination of mgetty
|so that I can dial-out. Starting mgetty again is after that. How can I
|terminate mgetty so that modem becomes free for dialing out.

mgetty can be stopped manually by just commenting out the line from the
/etc/inittab and running init q.
If you wish to kill mgetty through a program, put the mgetty in a shell
wrapper and run the wrapper from /etc/inittab,
Modify the wrapper in your program to run mgetty or to kill the mgetty put
some thing useless like while () {}, and run init q. Remeber your wrapper
must not die / exit or else it will continue to respawn.
There must be a better way to do this.
