I guess somebthing was killing kdm. look into the initialisation script
fireed by run level 5. I guess its 'prefdm'. Which in turn is a script
which tries to read the /etc/sysconfig/desktop to guess the setting and
runs the appropriate xdm clone. Failing which it tries each one of gdm kdm
and xdm.
