hi

I just wanted to share this success with all the other people there who
might need to use two xservers . Whew , this tool long, but the taste of
success is great ! Read on ....

This is what I needed to do --

1) I wanted to work on Linux as the desktop environment :-)
2) I wanted to run the xserver on the solaris server to carry out the
work as per my project.

The problem was that once I went into GNOME , how to access the screens
for Solaris ?

one way is that you say
startx -display "server_name"

however this is an either-or-situation. Either I could run gnome or the
solaris GUI.

I posted a query in this list as to how to get around this situation & I
got an answer "Xnext". But nothing more. Thanks for the tip though.

However , since no one knew much , I was left on my own to get this
working .

At first I used
"xhost +
telnet to server
xterm & "

to get this done, opening many windows.

However, I have now got the solution to this problem. this is how you do
it.

open a terminal window and run

X :2 -display "server_name"

X -> you are telling a X server to start
2 -> the server session. By default GNOME ( or KDE) would be your
session 1
-display -> option for your display. You will have to give your server
name here - without the quotes . Presto ! you have an Xserver running
on console F8 !

to shift between the two servers use ctrl+alt+f7 ( for the GNOME
environment) and ctrl+alt+f8 for the other server.

If you use Xnest, you will get a window where the Xserver will be
running.

I hope this will help all the people who need to do something similar to
what I am doing .

I don't know how to take a snapshot , otherwise I could have sent the
image also of all this activity going on .

regards
vibhu..
